Since the shock producing energy (kinetic energy) in any given piping system can be calculated, the volume of compressed gas needed to absorb the energy and bring the moving column of water to a more gradual stop can also be calculated . Although some arresters have different thread size connections, simply matching pipe size with arrester connection is not a recommended method for specifying arresters.
